Periyar, in Kerala, lost more than 90% of its life to industrial pollution. Just one of the many rivers drowning in industrial estate discharges under the name of development. Floating dead fish were a regular sight in the area, close to my home town. This icon came to be used wherever the zero discharge campaign became active.
